Welcome Welcome

Welcome

Welcome from John Ralph,
Head of Gawura School

Welcome to Gawura School. Our School is a community built on trust, strong relationships and genuine partnership with families, carers and community who believe in the transformative power of education to change the lives of this generation of First Nations young people.

Every day our students are seen, known and valued, supported by dedicated teachers, Elders, mentors and specialist staff who work together to create culturally enriching learning experiences in a learning environment that honours and reflects First Nations histories, cultures and identity, building confidence in our students as learners. Our students feel safe, supported and proud of who they are.

Through strong foundations in literacy and numeracy, explicit teaching, high expectations and personalised support, students are encouraged to discover their God-given strengths and passions, and grow in the confidence to pursue future opportunities with hope.

We are incredibly thankful to our families, carers, Gawura Parent Advisory Committee and community, and generous Gawura First Nations Scholarship donors, whose support continues to make these opportunities possible for our students and helps strengthen pathways into secondary school and beyond. I encourage you to get involved and join us on this journey.

Welcome from Pastor Ray Minniecon, Co-Founder

Sharon and I greet you with honour, respect and a deep sense of hope as you enter this space.

Gawura School stands on more than foundations of education. It stands on Gadigal Country, on powerful stories, and on a living inheritance that stretches back thousands of years. Here, ancient wisdom is not left behind; it walks alongside contemporary learning, shaping young minds to see the world with clarity, courage, and compassion.

Our motivation to found the School?

Gawura School was born from a simple but profound truth: our children deserve an education that honours who they are. For too long, many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children have had to leave parts of themselves at the school gate. Gawura School was created to change that. We want Gawura School to be a place where identity is not diminished but strengthened, where culture is not an addition but a foundation, and where every child is seen, known, and valued.

What makes Gawura School unique?

Gawura School is a meeting place. A place where Christian faith and First Nations heritage walk together in respect. Where cultural knowledge, language, and kinship are held alongside academic excellence. Where learning is not only about achievement, but about belonging, responsibility, and connection to family and Country, to community, and to one another.

Why does our approach work?

It works because it is grounded in relationship with God and each other. When children are strong in who they are, they learn with confidence. When they feel safe and affirmed, they grow. When education speaks to both heart and mind, it becomes transformative. Gawura School nurtures the whole child, spiritually, culturally, and intellectually by creating a foundation for lifelong strength, learning and resilience.

The enduring purpose of Gawura School; Bridging Worlds, Building Futures, is not just a statement. It is a vocation. A calling to raise leaders who know who they are, who honour where they come from, and who are prepared to walk forward with strength into a rapidly changing world. Gawura School has helped build bridges. Real, living bridges between cultures, between histories, between school friendships and towards a shared future, grounded in truth.

May this website give you a glimpse of that vision. And may you see, as we do, that when young people are grounded in culture, guided by faith, and equipped with knowledge, they carry within them the power to shape a more just and hopeful future for all Australians.

Welcome!

Welcome from Aunty Sharon Minniecon, Co-Founder

Over the years, it has been deeply moving to see the impact Gawura School has had.

Gawura School has not only shaped its students, it has reshaped the wider St Andrew’s Cathedral School community. It has invited us all to listen more deeply, to walk more thoughtfully and honestly, and to grow in understanding and respect. This matters, because true education is never one-way. When First Nations wisdom is honoured, the whole community is enriched.

I have always believed in the power of education. It opens doors to opportunities and experiences that can do good for ourselves and others. I see this every day in how our students thrive and gain confidence at Gawura School, and in my yarns with their families and carers, who speak with pride as they watch their children embrace opportunities that were not available to them.

Thank you for being here and for taking the time to learn more about the Gawura School community. We are proud of all that has been built together, and we look forward with hope and excitement to what lies ahead for our young people.
