Co-curricular Co-curricular

Co-curricular

A significant strength of Gawura School is the depth of co-curricular activities offered as a part of St Andrew’s Cathedral School’s Junior School.

These include extensive opportunities in music, art and performance, a progressive Outdoor Education Programme, and a wide variety of sports and sporting competitions, as well as many lunchtime or after school co-curricular activities.

Performing Arts

Gawura School students can enjoy many opportunities in music, drama and dance through St Andrew’s Cathedral School’s world class performing arts programme.

Students can learn a musical instrument or undertake vocal lessons utilising specialist tutors in purpose-built facilities, or join a number of ensembles, including jazz bands and orchestras.

In drama, students join a busy schedule of productions, from musicals to drama productions, and participate in annual whole school Showcase concerts at Sydney Town Hall.

First Nations dance lessons are led weekly by Aunty Rayma Johnson, a proud Wiradjuri woman and First Nations performer; previously a member of the prestigious Bangarra Dance Company.

A highlight of the School’s end of year Evening of Celebration and Prize Giving (ECAP) is the First Nations dance, which opens the evening and is led by Gawura School students. Students also lead performances at various events throughout the Schools’ calendars, including NAIDOC week.

Sport

Gawura School students join St Andrew’s Cathedral School’s comprehensive sporting programmes.

From Kindergarten to Year 6, students take part in a wide range of sports programmes and physical activities designed to build confidence and fundamental movement skills. Children have opportunities to stay active, build confidence, discover their strengths and develop a lifelong enjoyment of sport and wellbeing.

Kindergarten to Year 2: Students participate in gymnastics and swimming programmes.

Year 3-6: Students develop a range of skills in a different sport each term. These include Auskick, gymnastics, tennis, AFL, touch football, football, netball, tee-ball, cricket, volleyball and athletics. Students also participate in the School’s three major carnivals for swimming, cross country and athletics.

Year 4-6: Students are invited to participate in weekly inter-school competitions.

Gawura School students have the opportunity to take part in St Andrew’s Cathedral School’s High Performance Athlete Programme. This programme aims to develop athlete potential in students who show sporting aptitude, with access to an on-site gym, goal setting, sports nutrition, performance thinking and mentoring.

Gawura School students may be identified for this programme by the Head of High Performance Athlete Development who attends sporting competitions, training and PE classes, and coordinates with state and national sporting organisations to create pathways into their programmes, including developing programmes students can undertake at School.

Outdoor Education Programme

Gawura School students from Kindergarten to Year 6 join Junior School students each year in a progressive Outdoor Education Programme that builds community and character.

Each year, the outdoor programme aims to enable students to challenge themselves mentally and physically, and to build strong, lasting friendships. For many Gawura School students, these experiences, along with On Country experiences, become some of the most memorable and rewarding parts of their school journey.

As confidence and skills develop with age, students progressively shift from city-based programmes to camps at Kirrikee, St Andrew’s Cathedral School’s Outdoor Education Centre in the Southern Highlands.

Kindergarten to Year 1: Students attend a city-based day programme.

Year 2: Students attend their first overnight ‘camp out’ at the school.

Year 3-6: Students attend overnight and multi-day camps at Kirrikee.

At Kirrikee, there is continuity as each year builds on skills attained in previous years, and where the same staff work with students and their personal growth. Stage 3 students can also attend a three-day trip to Canberra and Lake Macquarie on the NSW Central Coast.

Other co-curricular

Whether a child is interested in coding or reading, science or robotics, a number of regular weekly clubs and activities are on offer for Gawura School students, who alongside students from Junior School, tap into individual interests and passions, building like-minded friendships across both Schools.
